[edit] Info on Repetitive Strain Injuries
Slightly offtopic, but since the Semantic Web is supposed to cure all computing ills, and I've just developed RSI, here's a scratchpad for information on RSI and related issues. As per wiki usual, feel free to add, augment, annotate. --danbri@w3.org
The trigger for this was the need to replace my laptop, and a concern that i'd make an ill-researched and ultimately painful decision. Links to laptop related content is particularly welcome here.
[edit] RSI links
The MIT site has this useful looking page. Right now I don't know what I don't know, I'm just hoarding links. Info systems RSI page
JWZ wrote "my wrists and welcome to them", which contains some good advice. Like: "First, if you are experiencing pain while typing, do something about it. This is incredibly important: this is not one of those problems that will just go away on its own. It will only get worse. And it will get worse."
See chat w/ AaronSw and JonB for a bit more on this. Excerpts:
<jonb> wear wrist splints _at night_ <jonb> lots of problems are exacerbated by sleeping with your wrists flexed <jonb> try splints at night, or fix your pillows so that you aren't sleeping on your hands ... <jonb> flexed, dorsiflexed ... <jonb> means wrist bent, dorsi is as if palm being pushed back, plantar is opposite direction <jonb> also when you sleep with your elbow over your shoulder it can compress the 'brachial plexus' <jonb> which is a bundle of nerves that travel to the arm and hand <jonb> the 'tingling' means the nerves are being compressed and that causes pain as well
Hugo Haas, as ever, has a very informative page on RSI. French RSI info. Reminds me to brush up on my french. He also has info on switching to the Dvorak keyboard layout, which I've been trying to put into action. The software and hardware bits are easy, unlearning Qwerty somewhat less so.
From Hugo on Gerald's fogo list: re "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!]. Also link to xwrits package, which is now at http://www.lcdf.org/~eddietwo/xwrits/ see also manual: http://www.lcdf.org/~eddietwo/xwrits/man.html
Magic healing gloves will make it all ok: TidBITS 02372 Well looks like an interesting idea anyway...
Liz Turner's mouse timebomb warning tale.
An interesting discussion on mezzoblue . Personally I just got a keyboard wrist rest and a mouse wrist rest (both from Kensington FYI), and I feel much better.
[edit] Laptop etc
- @@libretto (is it to blame? I hope not...).
- Recent Apple laptops (ibook, powerbook), strangely squishy keyboards... should borrow libby's for a few days...
- pointer devices, touch screens (fujitsu...)
- issues with handhelds? (I had a palm + foldy keyboard, largely unused; currently Handspring Visor, sometimes used)
- http://www.dvortyboards.com/typematrix2020_info.html dvorak ergo keyboard
