FoafCorp, which is an experiment in using RDF to describe company-related information.

We began with a conversion of the they rule dataset to RDF, and hope to extend that approach to carry richer information.

foafcorp++ suggested extensions:

Existing foafcorp vocabulary:

* fc:Company
* fc:Committee
* fc:board
* fc:member
* fc:stockCode
* fc:filings (this looks like it needs rethought? where does it originate)

proposed extensions from [[1][McC]]

* fc:owns

(internal, external companies)

* fc:Shareholding
* fc:shareholder

(list of shareholders, number of shares on each market, percentage of shares? this is a big grey area which probably needs thought through with a specialist once there is a use case for it)

* fc:employs (this is a crude category which will display

multiple categories: business management, investment banking, marketing, personnel etc)

* fc:funds (this data may be unavailable but we can draw

many inferences from its patchiness)

* fc:purchases ?
* fc:affiliatedWith

(eg Gate Foundation)

* fc:Product

(originated, manufactured, traded, distributed?)

* fc:Asset
* fc:regulatoryBody
* fc:judicialBody
* fc:tradeAgreement

migrant labour, grey market, movement of people within economies and the connection to control of formal companies.

wanting to express sister companies, holding companies...

* fc:businessPremises
* fc:businessHQ

geographical locations for properties in wgs84

also wondering about name changes, re-brandings and acquistions; it would be good to track the progress of such things; how to model changes of names in RDF; does a re-branding imply a new company, and how to identify the two as in-some-sense-the-same?

properties expressed in hierarchies.org

* Entity (superclass of Company?)
* Asset
* Parent
* Child
* Relationship - (vague; superclass of things like employs, owns?)

Okay time for me to chime here. I've been toying with the idea, for more than a year now, of grafting an RDF output mechanism to the HierarchiesProject DB. Believe it or not FoaF and then FoafCorp has spurred me into action. After a brief conversation with DanBri the other day I've been tinkering with an example document and a schema. I think it makes a lot of sense to build a schema that will satisfy both the HierarchiesProject and TheyRule. Our datasets have almost no overlap except for corp name so in my very naive view it's a good fit for RDF on both sides.

Some things I'm wondering currently, keeping in mind that I'm an RDF neophyte :

  • I threw together a web service mainly to power the chatbot. Should it spit out RDF instead of arrays of data?
  • The FoafCorp schema includes a property called 'board'. This property "contains"(?) a committee which in turn has members. Is it neccessary to have Committee within board?

I pointed JamesMoore at my bot mudlondon [5] which has an RESTful web api <-> instant message bot interface... we also exchanged schemas and brief thoughts wrt organisational mapping; i'm still collecting pieces and feedback for the mutemap [6]
