I believe members of VIATeC would achieve benefits with effective use of metadata and RDF and RSS.
Search engine visbility would be better. News releases are more likely to be picked up by interested parties and more widely disseminated. Job seekers would be more likely to become aware of jobs they were interested in via the internet (reducing cost of advertising jobs) since the location metadata would be valuable. Relevant return visits to member sites would increase.
Metadata that is important, in my opinion, for members of VIATeC include regarding web content includes:
* spacial location (Vancouver Island) * the fact they are members in VIATeC * what class of business the firm engages in (mostly technology firms like biotech, infotech, or consulting services, etc). * if applicable, whether the data is a press release, corporate propoganda, job add.
I think its a relatively simple task to figure out:
* the bestVIATeCWay of representing this metadata (rdf, html meta tag) * what the VIATeCOntologies would be. * new VIATeCRDFSchemas, if any, that are required. * whether the metadata should be centralizedOrDistributed. * whether this metadata and what additional metadata would go into VIATeCMemberRSS feeds to indicate the nature of the feed which might include: job adds; press releases; corporoate propaganda;
If you have any thoughts on the above, please make edits on the appropriate page.
Once the design is done, I expect this metadata will be very easy to incorporate by VIATeC or their member firms, but that doesn't mean they will do it. This project is really a hobby research project on my part (cool eh!) and although I will make them aware of the research and see what happens.
Currently, to my knowledge, none of the member firms of VIATeC use RDF or produce RSS, and this initative is my own and not sponsored by VIATec. To my knowledge, none of the member firms of VIATeC produce RSS or RDF and most don't use the Dublic Core, and most of these firms have no one on staff who understand the value these would provide to their businesses.
I am hoping for lots of edits on the MetadataVIATEC pages on this wiki, and that when this is all sorted out (it shouldn't be too hard) it can be an example of how to design metadata -- how to express things like "a is a member of B". Once one gets the ideas of triples, picking the values for those triples is daunting (and RdfSerialization is always fun).

Viatec and most of the Victoriaa Tech community unfortunately has not figured out RSS. It is unlikely this will go anywhere.
