Photo Meta Tools

Having image metadata (especially photos) in RDFWeb is fun, but we need better authoring and/or management tools. This page is to keep track of ideas, wishlists, feature requests etc. for tools that describe images in the RDFWeb project.

Editing policy: if you have wishlist feature ideas for RDF image/photo tools (especially authoring tools), feel free to jot down ideas or links in this Wiki page. (danbri@rdfweb.org)

Current status

  • this is very draft, need to add URLs and content. mostly a placeholder**

Tools

Several categories. Full GUI (eg. rdfpic), Web-form tools (Libby's co-depiction pages), textual interaction (commandline oriented, eg. Gerald's stuff or text chat (IRC based a la chump annotations). Also image regions can be annotated (see SVG facilities in Amaya for creating the overlays).

GUI: For Windows, Exifer permits editing Jpeg comments. Postcardware. http://www.friedemann-schmidt.com/software/exifer/

Command Line: For command-line warriors, there is JpegRDF. http://nwalsh.com/java/jpegrdf/jpegrdf.html For the java uninitiated, this program is difficult to setup.

Vocabulary

In RDFWeb there are a few constucts in the FOAF vocab (depiction, Image, thumbnail, img etc). In addition we've used the Wordnet vocabulary as a huge store of nouns, and other FOAF things (homepage, mbox) to help identify individual things depicted in an image. Also we're using Dublin Core, and (I think) bits of the Annotea and RDFPic vocabularies.

Infrastructure

We want to make it cheap and easy to describe images. This means that our authoring tools (whether GUI, webform or textual) will need to do as much work as possible for us. If someone is cataloguing an image that they took, the tool should be able to consult an (RDF)Web service to (for example) get a list of their friends, colleagues etc as possible input into the cataloguing process. This should be common across frontend UIs; can probably do this with SOAP or HTTP GET interface to remote RDF query service (@@prototype-url).

Accessibility

Are there Accessibility-related requirements that we should be explicitly thinking about when building tools?
